Biography

Elena Karavodin was born in Los Angeles, CA. Elena is a second-generation U.S. citizen tracing her roots back to the 19th century Russian sculptor M.O. Mikeshin. Surrounded by a family of artists, scientists and engineers, her interests always remained toward the arts. Elena studied classical piano and creative writing before committing herself to painting. She began her formal education at Laguna College of Art and Design in Laguna Beach, CA receiving her B.F.A. with an emphasis in Illustration, and Fine Art. In 2010, Elena joined the collective of ArtHatch’s Studio Artists in Escondido, CA, and contributed as ArtHatch’s Gallery Manager for 4.5 years. Her work has been shown in various group exhibitions throughout the United States, including New York, Brooklyn, Chicago and San Diego. She considers the native California environment to be a strong influence, including her history, her love of nature and the human form. Elena lives in San Diego with her family. She has a young son, who’s daily discoveries and growth inspire her to push her creative process even further.

Artist Statement

“Art is the tool that I use to show my emotions, to express my beliefs, and to share new thoughts and ideas through unique visual representations. Content, color, and concept are the cornerstones of each piece. Working with bright oil colors and loose texture, I produce images that are often layered and pieced together, one on top of another. I am inspired by people, history and the nature that surrounds me. While creating I strive to bring a sense of truth to each subject. But the truth of each piece will only fully come together through the process of painting. It is my hope to create a sense of wonder in the viewer; to encourage the viewer to look further into the piece until they find something new, something they hadn’t seen at first glance. But beyond self-expression, my aim is to use my art as a tool for social speculation, inquiry, and the evocation of raw emotions.”
