“As with many of the WW1 paintings that I have created, I start with an actual photograph from that period. This particular one, haunted me. We see a man getting fitted for a mask, most likely due to extreme facial disfigurements from the war. As he tries to hide himself beneath this mask, he ends up becoming another oddity, a tin face, maybe something ¬†even scarier than what he was before. Perfection is unattainable, it is the oddities and variations that are most real.”
